AND AGAIN...

More retro-rockism. Crawling backwards through the wreckage. Call it what you will. Including late for dinner.

This one was the first show I did using my 40th birthday present, a brand-new laptop. As indefatigably old-school as I tend to be when doing these shows, I must say that having a fresh source (in addition to the usual turntables, CD players, cassette decks and live in-studio yodellers) to add to the on-air mix has proven quite exciting. Not in this particular episode so much - no, as with any attempt to grapple with new technology in real time, I spent an ungodly portion of it growling, shaking my fist at phantom antagonists, and using words that, if uttered on-mic and toted up correctly, would translate into about $2.6 million in FCC fines. Don't get me wrong, the old technology failed me just as much as the new stuff - y'know, you get a record, it says "33 1/3 RPM" on the sleeve, you don't imagine they just put it there because that was their best guess, do you? Yeah, neither did I. One doesn't get to hear the sounds of a record being played at 2/3rds speed, stopped, run backwards in panic, followed by the needle being angrily ripped from it and very audibly relowered onto the start of the tune, on the radio quite enough these days. An increasing plurality of American radio stations have gone largely if not wholly automated, which is why commercial radio is full of things like two commercials playing at once, songs beginning and ending at odd times, the phrase "ANOTHER ROCK BLOCK-OCK-OCK..." looping endlessly through the middles of songs, and pre-recorded DJs back-announcing songs they last played three days before. All offputting, bizarre, cold, sterile. Not this show, though - I promise you that, no matter what machinery is being used, all the massive fuckups you hear on my program are the result of 100% human error. That's my pledge to you, the listener.

...here's the first of the playlists for my last several broadcasts (in reverse chronological order), as kiped from spinitron.com, the site all KMUN DJs are now required to use in order to be allowed to keep webstreaming. Maybe I'll plug in explanations/show anecdotes or whatever it is you call the typical mumblings I'm prone to one of these days, and maybe I'll do something with the formatting beyond removing the phrase "Buy It!" after each entry, and maybe neither you nor I give enough of a shit either way to do anything.

A CHILD'S GARDEN OF FORKING PATHS?:

Or, to put it in a less overtly hey-I've-read-a-book manner, the return to the air (and this coast) of my dear boy, Liam, for whom I bifurcated this fortnight's program - one hour his, one hour mine. I'll happily excuse the Black Eyed Peas track, because of his absolute insistence that we give Philly Boy Roy Ziegler his fair share of airtime. *sniff* Excuse me, I think it's getting a little dusty in here...

A SEMI-AUSPICIOUS OCCASION...

...celebrated in what felt to me like a highly inauspicious manner. This was the third-anniversary edition of W&F, which gave me a fine excuse just to play the first ten minutes of my very first show while I attempted to slap myself into sensibility. This has been a very long day for me, and it's not over yet as I write this. I still have to make the twenty-minute drive home, and hey! I just noticed that, in addition to all the mishaps and misadventures that transpired throughout this very long day (slashed finger, aching ankles, bad mustache I'm stuck with all summer due to a theatrical obligation, technology failing me in myriad ways, lots of frenetic activity and barely-suppressed rage at my overall circumstances), I appear to have left my wallet somewhere. Hopefully at home. So, if you don't hear from me again after this post, assume the heat nabbed me. Or that I'm still asleep. Or that I tracked down whoever's responsible for automatically layering in those links in blogspot posts on words like "flowers," "movies" or "singles," there was a death struggle, and I lost (though not, hopefully, before I hotlinked his ass with a hot-plate coil). Yet, somehow, in spite of it all, the show came out pretty damned good! Go; then figure.

(ex-post facto notes: 1) Yes, I know I played Josef K twice. Another fatigue-inspired programming hiccup, though the two tracks sound like very different bands anyway. b) Apparently, those hyperlinks on words like "flowers," "movies" and "singles" only show up on certain browsers/computers, and not all of them show up on those, either, so some of you may have no idea what I'm talking about up there. Fuggin' annoying either way. e) I want to set up a system whereby I can take requests [I can rarely fulfill them while I'm in the studio, due to the limitations of both my portable music collection - I don't own an iPod, people! I have to bring a big ol' garment bag full up of CDs and vinyl every time I do a show! Gaze upon my freakishness! - and that of the station's itself, though if you're ever looking for an England Dan and John Ford Coley track or a deep cut from Doug & the Slugs, we'll have you covered], in part to help break myself out of certain musical ruts I frequently find myself in and in part to establish that people actually read this blog/listen to this show. So here's the deal: use the comments link at the bottom of the post and hit me with a request, and unless it's egregiously bad or ridiculously out of sync with the kind of stuff I usually play, bearing in mind that I at least theoretically have pretty wide-ranging tastes, I'll play it on my next show. π) Thanks as usual to my bro, Bob, for his suggestions and guidance, and in this case, his .zip file of worthy playlistable candidates. Three of the songs below come via his wise nudging.)

A RATHER SAFE SHOW, ALL IN ALL...

...but you'd play it safe too if you've been averaging three hours sleep several nights running. You might not play a couple of songs you already played on the air recently (I don't imagine even the Ugly Ducklings' families have played their stuff twice in one week for quite some time), but that's what makes my fatigue unique and special.

FUCK, FUCK, FUCK...

...Ron Asheton's dead. So's Patrick McGoohan. And Ray Dennis Steckler. I paid tribute to all three tonight, and paid proper homage to our soon-to-be-ex-commander-in-chief. Too bad nobody will ever hear the show, since I neglected to hit the "record" button on the station's CD burner. And that knowledge caused me to royally fuck up the back end of the show. This had better not augur badly for the new year. Fuck, fuck, fuck. Whatever.
