NOW THAT ONE WAS FUN, GODDAMMIT:

Breaking out of whatever ruts I've self-imposed, I went heavy on the live audio collagisizing this week, utilizing a couple of Negativland's (actually, Neagtivland member Don Joyce's) Over the Edge radio programs, a bunch of sound effects records, random superimpositions and a six-second-long Paul Westerberg song. Whereas the last show wound up sounding a lot better than it felt programming it, I have the feeling this one is a friggin' mess to hear. But the most fun I've had in quite a while doing this thing nonetheless. So I'll take it. (R.I.P. Mitch Mitchell.)

AM I GETTING TIRED OF DOING THIS SHOW?:

Man, I'm feelin' mighty uninspired tonight. Or maybe I need sleep. Or shouldn't have eaten just before the show. That would account for the sloppiness, the repeats of previously-played songs, and the who the fuck cares you self-consciously self-aggrandizing walking whitehead nobody's reading this blog much less listening to your fucking show and putting up with your weak-ass musical taste anyway. Or maybe I'm just bummed that Jimmy Carl Black is dead. Eh.

I CAN'T THINK OF ANYTHING FUNNY TO PUT HERE...

...which is more or less keeping in line with the show I, and my friends Slab and Don, just did. Oh, we had a hell of a lot of fun, no question, and we're all three reasonably talented performers when the tides are right, but once again I/we made the error of thinking that coming up with funny stuff off the top of my/our heads without any preparation whatsoever is a lot easier than it actually is. At one point, we rambled aimlessly enough that we got a call - on air - from our program director telling us to play some damn music already. Great guys, though. We'll nail it next time.

INANITY, THY NAME IS ME:

Liam's back, for the second and (sadly) final time this summer. The first five songs (which, including all the wacky interstitial banter, took up the full first half-hour) were his choice. The rest were hurriedly hashed together by me in the rather crazed atmosphere of the studio, being further visited by a friend from the theatre and by a stray black cat, which accounts for the rather high number of songs that had been played in earlier shows, not that anyone notices nor cares. (Any significance to the fact that the temperature was exactly 66.6 degrees through most of the show? No, of course not, you nit.)

I AM JOE'S BLOG POST TITLE.

The only thing of any interest in this bi-week's episode is the utter and conspicuous lack of the usual inter-song comedy bits. But then, who needs intentional comedy when you have the Jefferson Airplane pshilling psychedelically for Levi's, the utter unique in(s)anity of John the Postman, and me attempting to pronounce "Gbeti Madjro"?

GOOD SHOW. DIVERSE, A-FLOWING, INTERESTING.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll try to make it to may car without running into the rather, um, unhinged sounding gentleman who kept calling tonight and praising my show in spite of the fact that his radio doesn't work and somebody's been interfering with his own personal reception. ONE YEAR FROM TONIGHT - NOTHING BUT SONGS UNDER THREE SECONDS LONG:

In honor of Wow & Flutter's second anniversary, this week's show is comprised solely of songs two minutes and less in length. (The full tally would have been even more impressive had I not had to sublet 35 minutes of my airtime to one of the new DJs; though his eight-song set was technically part of the program, I will spare you the embarrassment of having to read it. CONTROLLED CHAOS ON A STICK, MINUS THE CONTROL AND PART OF THE STICK:

Wow, this was a fun one, albeit one fringed with an unsurprising sprig of pre-game stress. Nothing major, just the usual home software failures that kept several fine tracks (including a number of excellent suggestions from mon frere jambon, who has become rather a full-fledged consultant in recent weeks) from being saved to disc and thus transferred to air, blah blah blurg. But no matter - between the homemade mashups and comedy bits and my newfound ability to really bring the flow, real live DJ-style, the show's getting pretty entertaining and slightly nuts. Which makes me increasingly peeved at having perhaps the worst timeslot on the station, precluding most folks from, y'know, listening and all, but nahh, it doesn't matter. I will someday be recognized as the aural pioneer that I always wanted to be, then luxuriate in the joyous cries of "oh, never mind. I thought you were someone else. Anybody ever tell you you looked like an aural pioneer?" (Sorry, I'm tired. One AM is babblematic time.)

AT LAST THE 1983 SHOW (ETHEL MERMAN I SHOULD TURN TO BE):

In commemoration of KMUN's 25 years on the air, I have decided to pay tribute to the musical year 1983. Which, to be brutally frank, is about the only reason anybody'd want to pay tribute to the musical year 1983. Not that a fairly kick-ass two hour show couldn't be hashed together consisting solely of records issued that annum, but let's be straight - very few bands were operating at their peak that year. 1982? Sure. 1984? Most def. But c'mon and c'moff it, almost everybody who was somebody sometime was either in the process of becoming great but not quite there yet (the Fall, the Dü, the Youth, the 'men, G. Theory), starting their long journey downward (the Heads, the Pretenders, Elvis the C.), or on their way to quick oblivion (the Birthday Party, the Plimsouls, Minor Threat, and what a weird procession that makes, eh?). Nonetheless, I'm rather proud of what I pulled out of that year that was. Pity I didn't have time for "Total Eclipse of the Heart."

THE BIG STORY THIS WEEK...

...is the debut of the first of my homemade mash-ups (only, oh, five years after that whole phenomenon peaked and slowly slid away) at the top and tail of the program. The second one (#40) was comprised of the first four minutes of the Beyond the Valley of the Dolls score, Orchid Spangiafora and Lord Buckley. The first (#1) was made up of no fewer than eleven different edited, mutated and mutilated recordings, from Butthole Surfers and Big Black to Public Enemy and Michael O'Donoghue beating the shit out of Mr. Whipple. Fairly impressive, and it would be even more so if you were listening to hear it. But you weren't, and you didn't. So nertz to you, jib-jab.

PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH TREAT?:

For feck's sake, people - CD players have not been good to me of late. The one in my truck shuts off every time I try to take the disc that's now stuck in there in perpetuity out, the one in my mother's car refuses to play any of the CD-Rs I make in preparation for the show, and now, the CD burner at the station is broken, meaning that my standard archival recording of this week's show has had to be done on... cassette. IF YOU'RE PAYING ATTENTION...

...you can usually pick out the various obsessions and pop-cultural tripwires that inspire my bi-weekly playlist. A Freaks and Geeks watching binge, leading to both an XTC tune and a gen-ewww-ine disco number? You bet. Overhearing the phrase "bottle of smoke" on The Wire, reigniting memories of a wonderfully obscene Pogues reel (in both form and function)? Yeah, man. Watching a neighbor's eyes get packed out by my trained pet crows, reminding me of... ah, but maybe I've said too much.

JET LAGNIAPPE:

I'm very, very tired. Stressed from a bad travel experience and slightly disoriented and confused. Which accounts for the number of repeats from previous shows, when I usually prefer never to play the same song twice. Not that anyone except me pays attention to such things. Anyway, not a bad show under the circumstances. Happy new year. And Delta Airlines can suck it.
